REUKNIGHTED: A Cupid Couple Romance from the Class of 2014

February 11th, 2025

“Love was in the air in the Class of 2014.” Elizabeth Howe Rotenberg ’14

Lifelong friends Elizabeth Howe and Weldon Rotenberg married in June of 2023. The two say there is something special about their graduating class, and they are one of several Cupid Couples who found love on Woodland Ridge Boulevard.

Elizabeth and Weldon were born two weeks apart at the same hospital, grew up in the same neighborhood and eventually began attending the same school. While their parents knew each other in college, Elizabeth and Weldon truly connected at Episcopal. The couple began dating in eighth grade. Their first date was at Maxwell’s Market after Weldon gave Elizabeth a $25 gift card for a lunch date. Later, their first kiss was during Karnival Knight. While the early romance didn’t last, the two remained best friends throughout high school. “I was at their house all the time,” says Elizabeth. “I was the adopted daughter of the all-boy Rotenberg clan.”

It's Official!

On June 17, 2023, Elizabeth officially became a Rotenberg daughter, 17 years after she and Weldon first connected. Weldon and Elizabeth married in Fairhope, Alabama, a place filled with special family memories and the site of their engagement. The wedding festivities were filled with love and laughter. As the crowd of wedding well-wishers toasted the bride and groom, there was a general sense that the union was no surprise. Guests asserted that even in those early days of dating, they knew the wedding day would come. “When were y’all not together?” one guest reflected.

Best friends throughout high school, the couple was, in fact, frequently together. As a Knight, Weldon played basketball, football and tennis. Elizabeth was the Episcopal Fan Club President and was always on hand to cheer on the team and Weldon. “I went to everything,” she recalls. “I had a lot of school spirit.” In addition, when Elizabeth suited up for the Knights volleyball team, Weldon was in the stands. The two seemed to always show up and support each other even then.

All in On Learning

Elizabeth and Weldon were active and engaged in the Episcopal experience. “We enjoyed going to school every day,” says Elizabeth. “I was all in on learning.” With so many meaningful school experiences, it can be challenging to narrow down a favorite. One of Elizabeth’s most memorable experiences was being a member of the Student Vestry. “It was an important part of my time at Episcopal,” she recalls. The vestry experience was so important that Elizabeth and Weldon were thrilled to have Father Ralph Howe officiate the wedding. Father Howe, who is not related to Elizabeth, made the journey to Alabama, and that is something the couple truly appreciated.

Another opportunity the couple looks back on with gratitude was being part of the school’s first Quest for Peace class. Even now, Weldon shares their experience with people he meets. He is still somewhat in awe of the fact that the students toured Angola State Penitentiary, visited death row and witnessed LSU great Billy Cannon provide dentistry assistance. After more than a decade away from Episcopal, the experience is still powerful. “It was different from everything else in school,” he says.

All in On Traditions

The couple also values the traditions that make Episcopal such a special place. They both remember graduation fondly. “The ceremony is as good as it gets,” says Weldon. The traditional senior prank is also something Weldon won’t soon forget. With a sense of pride, he recalls that the Episcopal senior class switched places with members of the UHigh senior class. The students exchanged uniforms and parking passes and arrived for class as if it were just a normal day. “We were pretty aggressive,” he says regarding the commitment to pulling off the prank.

All in On Love

After such an enriching Episcopal experience, Weldon and Elizabeth felt ready to take on college. Weldon attended Ole Miss, and Elizabeth chose LSU. The two remained in touch, with Elizabeth even vacationing with the Rotenbergs. Eventually, the deep friendship evolved into something more, and to the delight of their families, Weldon and Elizabeth began dating again. After growing up together and being there for each other for so long, the Cupid Couple knew the relationship would last.

Weldon and Elizabeth have a life based on the friendship that sparked long ago. The two live in Houston with their beloved dog, Frankie. Elizabeth is a commercial banker, and Weldon is in sales and acquisitions in the chemical industry. The two enjoy traveling and are planning a trip to Japan this year. In the future, they plan to start a family. After benefiting so much from their own Episcopal experience, Elizabeth says they’ll instill those same values in their children.

There is something special about finding a love built on friendship and a shared school experience. Happy Valentine’s Day to our Episcopal Cupid Couples who celebrate such lasting relationships, and a special Happy Valentine’s Day to Elizabeth and Weldon.
