Winter Sports Spotlight - January 2023

Basketball
Boys
It’s already been an exciting season for the Knights. The team celebrated an undefeated run in the 51st annual Episcopal Classic and big victories home and away. Most recently, the Knights came up big versus Teurlings Catholic.

Girls
The Knights have fought hard this season, with big wins versus Central and Madison Prep. Current athletes enjoyed the opportunity to spend time on the court with alumni from the first Episcopal girls basketball team. It was great seeing Shelby Seger ’82, Nikki Seger ’80, Fran Teeter Flory ’80 and Robin Kirkpatrick Clausen ’79 back on campus.
Head Coach Taylor Mims Wharton ’09 is celebrating a new role as Episcopal’s Assistant Athletic Director. In this position, she will coordinate community service opportunities for athletes, assist with professional development for coaches and manage third party rentals of athletic facilities.

Soccer
Boys
The boys are ranked #5 in the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches poll! The Knights had tremendous success in the EIL soccer tournament in Lafayette defeating Comeaux 2 - 1 and Teurlings Catholic 3 - 2. The Knights were also the champions of the Acadiana Tournament.
Congratulations to junior forward Lane Mendoza who was honored with a selection to the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association Team of the Week.
Make plans to head to the pitch.

Girls
The girls are ranked #4 in the Division IV Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches poll! The Knights have already had an impressive season with JV and varsity winning versus The Willow School and varsity putting up a big win versus Catholic High Pointe Coupee 11 – 0. The girls were undefeated in the 20th annual Dominican Tournament in New Orleans.
Congratulations to junior midfielder Sarah Bonnecaze who was honored with a selection to the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association Team of the Week.

Soccer alumni enjoyed a day back on the pitch during the alumni soccer game. It was an exciting match for former athletes of all ages. Congratulations to the Navy team for the win.

Powerlifting
Congratulations to the Episcopal powerlifters! The team finished on top in 2A at the Dale Weiner Invitational with 11 of 16 lifters finishing in first, second or third place.

Wrestling
Update: Junior Will York placed fifth in the 195 lb. weight class at the recent Ken Cole Invitational Wrestling Meet. Will is ranked number two in his weight class in Division III.
The Episcopal wrestlers have a lot to celebrate. The team had a great showing at the Snowman Invitational, with sophomore JV wrestler Joshua Godfrey placing second in his weight class and fellow sophomore Genti Brahimi scoring for the team. Varsity wrestler Will York also placed second at the Jimmy Vidrine Invitational.
The wrestlers are gearing up for the Baton Rouge City Tournament.

Middle School
Middle School athletes are competing hard and representing the Knights well. Here are a few highlights of this winter sports season.
Basketball
The sixth grade boys won against Most Blessed Sacrament in the St. Jean Vianney tournament, and the seventh and eighth grade boys won against St. Jean Vianney. The sixth grade boys also celebrated a win versus Dunham.
Soccer
The boys beat McKinley Middle 5 - 0 and STEM 8 - 0 and advanced to the championship game of the St. Michael’s Holiday Cup. The girls beat the Black Widows 2 -1 and tied SJV 1 - 1 and also advanced to the championship game.
The girls gold team won the Baton Rouge Soccer Club end of season tournament last weekend. What a way to finish strong!
