Knights Post Winning Record of Service
December 8th, 2022
“Serving others reminds us to be grateful for everything God has given us.” Taylor Wharton, Episcopal Girls Basketball Head Coach
This time of year, people often think of opportunities to serve and give to others. Episcopal’s Taylor Wharton strives to keep that spirit going all year and is passionate about sharing service with others. Wharton recently organized several opportunities for student athletes to serve. She says serving together has real benefits for a team. “Service is so important on a team setting like athletics because serving others is always humbling and rewarding,” says Wharton. “I would like athletes to come away with a feeling of purpose, fulfillment, and humility after their service experiences. I want athletes to be grateful for every good thing in their lives.”
Loving and Serving Others as a Team
After a successful fall sports season, the Knights certainly have much for which to be grateful. Amid the victories and playoff runs, the teams took time out to help others. Members of the cross country, volleyball and girls soccer teams volunteered with the Miracle League, TOPSoccer, Totes de Joie, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and the Shepherd’s Market Food Pantry. Next week, members of the girls and boys basketball teams will purchase gifts for children with the Boys & Girls Club. Wharton is excited to see Episcopal students getting so involved. “Service is about sacrificing to make someone’s life better,” she says. “Our student athletes have a chance to take part in loving and serving others in our Episcopal and Baton Rouge communities.” That focus on service will continue next semester as the baseball, softball and track athletes are already making plans for spring projects.
Wharton sees service projects as a natural extension of the Episcopal mission. “Preparing graduates for purposeful lives means to provide opportunities for personal growth such as community service,” she says. Hopefully, that commitment to service will remain a part of these athletes’ lives even after they hang up their jerseys.
Thank you to everyone who participated in an Episcopal service-learning experience this semester.
Food Drive Success!
The entire Episcopal community once again showed tremendous support for the annual Shepherd’s Market Food Pantry. Representatives from Shepherd’s Market say this year’s total of 4,090 pounds of food is a new Episcopal record! That record includes 45 turkeys! Thank you to everyone in every division who made this year’s food drive such a success.
IRIS Partnership
Each year, students, faculty and staff work with representatives from the IRIS Domestic Violence Center to help families fulfill their holiday wish lists. This is traditionally a rewarding opportunity for student groups, including student advisory groups, teams and clubs, to work together to make a difference. Thank you to everyone who participated this year!
