Nurturing a Love of Learning
November 10th, 2021
Members of the Episcopal faculty love learning and love sharing that love with their students. Sophomore Avery Kyle shares a student’s perspective on why that matters and the difference it makes for learners of all ages.
Scott Haydn, an African-American ragtime composer, once said, “Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.” As a student who has attended Episcopal since Pre-K, I have been fortunate to have been taught by teachers who loved learning, loved the learner, and brought the two loves together. I am currently a sophomore, and I now realize that Episcopal has been a second home for me for as long as I can remember and has helped shape me into who I am today.
In lower school, I remember teachers such as Mrs.Crawford and Mrs.Cutrer who made learning fun and exciting. These teachers always found ways to push and to challenge each student appropriately. They made every bit of learning exciting for a seven-year-old. For example, I looked forward to reading on the yoga balls and to reciting poems for family and friends. We even wrote our own stories and published books about things we loved and the experiences we encountered. When I went into middle school, Mrs.Weaver began to facilitate my love for history and English. In history, I enjoyed making a 3-D representation of the Greensboro Sit-In. This project encouraged me to research and to make a visual representation of my research. These teachers loved me and gave me a love for learning.
In my freshman year of high school, my love for literature and writing grew exponentially, and I became more involved in my school community by applying to be a Writing Fellow. I now help students write and encourage them to find a love of their own. Taking Honors Composition has pushed me not only to become a better writer but to love writing. Episcopal nurtures my passion to write by providing classes that challenge and interest me, such as honors and AP courses and academic electives. I have become more involved with my community through bake club, youth legislator, being a cheerleader, and the writing center. At Episcopal, there are infinite opportunities for students to get involved with any love that they have through clubs, plays, teams, and academics.
As a college preparatory school, Episcopal provides students with the necessary academic rigor needed to prepare them for college curriculums, and teachers and staff create an environment where students can find their passions, pursue them, and eventually share them with the wider community. Today, I am in the process of creating a workshop for students to attend about the process of writing. In this workshop, I hope to share my love of writing and to spark a love of learning in my peers, too. I am thankful that Episcopal creates an environment where every student can learn and grow.
