Episcopal Presents "Shrek Jr. the Musical"
September 24th, 2024
“It’s high energy and a lot of heart.” Lily McGill, Episcopal Theater Teacher & Production Director
The story of Shrek still strikes a chord with people of all ages, even though it first hit theaters in the spring of 2001. Knowing this, Episcopal Theater Teacher & Production Director Lily McGill chose “Shrek Jr. the Musical” for this fall’s Middle School musical. The choice has proven to be a hit. “The kids really love Shrek,” says McGill with excitement. McGill says she was pleasantly surprised by the large turnout for auditions and the increased interest among Middle Schoolers. She says the production also allows for varying levels of involvement, which means students can balance their love for theater with their passion for athletics and the requirements of academics.
Make Plans to See Shrek
“Shrek Jr. the Musical” opens in October and features 55 students in grades fifth through eighth. Mark your calendars now for the following performances. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.
Friday, October 11th at 6:30 pm
Saturday, October 12th at 2 pm
Saturday, October 12th at 6:30 pm
Sunday, October 13th at 2 pm
McGill says Shrek is a one-hour performance appropriate for all ages. She says it is very funny with jokes, gags and outlandish costumes. There’s also a more serious message emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance, which McGill says is relevant for the young actors.
Rising to the Challenge
Audiences may notice that this year’s production is a little earlier than in the past. McGill says the timeline was adjusted to better accommodate the eighth grade Mo Ranch trip. In addition, the play now fits nicely within the first quarter. It has taken considerable planning, but McGill says it is worth it. “The students are rising to the challenge,” she says. McGill points out that several students are successfully taking on lead roles for the first time, and she is proud of what the cast has accomplished thus far. “I’ve seen so much growth in the students,” says McGill. “It’s rewarding to see students' knowledge and ability grow.”
Shrek will also feature the creations of Visual & Performing Arts Director Louis Gagliano and the Technical Theater class students. You can expect a vibrant forest, Fiona’s tower, Shrek’s outhouse and Castle Duloc. In addition, music direction is provided by Tori Taylor and choreographer is provided by Christine Chrest.
