2023 Youth Legislature Success
December 13th, 2023
2023 was another successful year for Episcopal’s Youth Legislature delegation. Several students had bills that passed both legislative chambers and were signed by the government including the tenth-grade duo of Meredith Hill and Sofia Leo whose bill requires travelers on Louisiana roads to secure all materials they haul or face a steep penalty. Eleventh grader Savanna Baker’s bill which establishes an Agricultural Bond program in Louisiana to promote the agricultural sector also passed and was signed by the governor. Twelfth graders Hayden Singh and Ramsey Greene’s bills promoting industrial electrification and decommissioning obsolete dams, respectively, were also signed by the governor. Singh was also selected as the “Outstanding Delegate” for his Senate chamber.
Twelfth grader Sam Messina’s bill about pediatric blood sugar testing passed out of committee and his House Chamber before being deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Eleventh grader Miniya Malone was elected to serve on State Board as House Speaker Pro Tempore. This year Malone also served on State Board as a House Floor Leader alongside twelfth graders John Luke Boagni and Riley Posey. Ryder Bond was selected before the conference to represent the Baton Rouge district on the Supreme Court.
Episcopal’s Youth Legislature team included ninth graders Daniel Lindsey, Kate Lyons, and Nate McLean; tenth graders Autumn Baldridge, Adam Chittom, Maeve Dolan, Meredith Hill, and Sofia Leo; eleventh graders Ryder Bond, Savanna Baker, and Miniya Malone; and twelfth graders John Luke Boagni, Ramsey Claire Greene, Riley Posey, and Hayden Singh. The club is led by Greene, Posey, and Singh. This is Dr. Kuhn’s eighth year sponsoring the Youth & Government Club at Episcopal. While this is Mr. Rowe’s first year sponsoring Youth & Government at Episcopal, he is no stranger to the activity having sponsored the club at Lakeshore HS before coming to Episcopal.
The three-day Youth Legislature conference took place at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge. Episcopal students interested in debating public policy and global issues can participate in the Model United Nations conference which will be held at the Holiday Inn on Airline Highway February 29-March 2, 2024.
