Opening Next Week: "Finding Nemo Jr."
November 1st, 2023
Episcopal’s upcoming presentation of “Finding Nemo Jr.” promises to be a visual delight. “It’s a big bright Disney show,” says Theatre Production Director Lily McGill. Audiences can expect a sea of brightly colored shrimp, jellyfish, lobsters, sharks and more. The handcrafted set takes observers on an ocean adventure among coral reefs and seaweed. McGill says the presentation is ideal for all ages and is sure to excite fans of the movie. “It’s very nostalgic,” she says.
With a double cast, 56 fourth through eighth grade students will star in “Finding Nemo Jr.” “We want to give as many people as possible an opportunity to shine,” says McGill. She says this production has a slightly different feel compared to previous Episcopal presentations, with less dance and more storytelling. “It reminds me of a play,” she says. “Visually, it’s like a storybook.”
The storybook visuals are sure to get a boost from the Visual & Performing Arts Center’s updated lighting. Visual & Performing Arts Department Director Louis Gagliano says phase one of the update is complete, with a new cyclorama, LED lights and lighting console. To truly take audiences beneath the waves, the system will create rippled lighting that mimics the sun reflecting on water. In addition, a black light will make the characters more vibrant.
A Sea of Support
Bringing Nemo to the stage requires collaboration among the arts department and Lower School faculty. Lower School music teacher Jordan Tupper serves as music director, with religion teacher Jenny Koenig and voice instructor Dr. Analynn Sober assisting. Upper School thespians are also providing light and sound support. Another important part of any Episcopal production is the audience, and McGill is sure the school community will show up to support these young performers. “This is a supportive community,” she says. “I enjoy that kids and parents come to support us.”
