Lower School Learning
January 14th, 2022
Students are exploring the world and having fun doing it! Here’s a look at some of the recent adventures in the Episcopal Lower School.
PreK-3
To celebrate the beginning of king cake season, the littlest Knights painted their own versions of the Mardi Gras treat. Plus, PreK-3 is a great time to learn the value of teamwork to get a big job done.
PreK-4
From greenhouse prep to journaling and gardening, the PreK-4 Knights have been busy! Recently, Chefs Pat and Valentine stopped by the QUEST Center in Foster Hall to provide the students a lesson on growing lettuce. The young Knights were eager to plant seeds, and they enjoyed checking out the lettuce that was harvested from the hydroponic greenhouse. When not planting seeds, students stay busy working in their fine motor skills journals or playing in the PreK-4 garden.
2nd Grade
Second graders are logging miles in the EHS Aircraft as part of “The World Around Us” project-based learning unit. Students are learning to read maps and recognize basic landforms. They’ve already enjoyed playing in the snow in Antarctica and eating nachos from Mexico.
5th Grade
Inspired by the work of Elephant Aid International, fifth graders imagined what it’s like to be an elephant living in captivity. Teacher Nicole Engstrom used pool noodles to simulate an elephant’s size and asked students to think about what it would be like to live on a small plot of land. Afterward, students went outside for a snack as a simulation of what life is like for elephants at Elephant Refuge North America. The experience will inform the students’ submissions to the ERNA writing contest.
