Middle School Parent Newsletter | September 26, 2025

September 26th, 2025 by Anne Dalton

My father was a career Air Force officer, a part of my life story that remains deeply meaningful and transformative. It's a topic that always stirs my emotions. I feel incredibly blessed for all the experiences it provided me - both good and bad, each offering valuable lessons.

In the spring of 1990, we were leaving the coveted, tropical climate of Minot, North Dakota, for a one-year assignment in Montgomery, Alabama. I was entering 6th-grade, and my brother Scott was a junior in high school. Until then, Scott and I had enjoyed either the local public school or the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS). However, as our parents prepared for the move, they discovered that there would be no on-base housing available and no DoDDS high school for Scott. They researched neighborhoods and schools, believing it would be best for Scott to attend a local private school while I would go to the public school in our neighborhood. Though this decision stretched our budget, my parents were determined to make it work. My grandparents, ever supportive of our family (and never missing an opportunity to visit us and their other child, also in the Air Force - though I suspect they enjoyed visiting Crete and Germany even more than Minot), generously helped my parents with Scott's tuition. They took it a step further, insisting I also attend the private school and covering my tuition. That year, Scott and I were able to go to the same school.

While I never dreamed of being an educator (and I’m so grateful that God had different plans), I believe that year planted the seeds for my future in private and independent schools, a place that eventually became a source of immense joy outside my family.

It was that year that I was welcomed into a community. I attended our equivalent of "Mo-Ranch." I experienced small class sizes and felt truly known and seen at school. I was able to explore talents that had previously gone unrecognized. It was that year I discovered the magic of private and independent schools, all thanks to my grandparents' generosity.

I say all this to ask you, if you have not already, to please contribute to the eFund. The eFund is at the center of all giving initiatives and allows us to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and actual cost of running the school. Your gift to the eFund signifies a powerful vote of confidence in our school and community and makes it possible for us to fulfill our mission. It’s for everything we do. It’s for everything we can be. It’s for everyone. Every year. It is your way of ensuring that the seeds planted now, will continue to bloom years from now.

As someone whose life was changed by just one year in private school, I thank you for your contributions, no matter the size. We are all in this together!

ATTENDANCE:

Please remember that all absences must be reported through PowerSchool.

Looking ahead into the semester, please also know that we will be emphasizing our attendance policy this year; students who miss more than four sessions of any one class will be required to make up the minutes.  This is to comply with Louisiana state law.  You may hear this policy referred to as “No More Than Four” and, while there are some exceptions for school-sanctioned absences and for unavoidable absences (hospitalizations, natural disasters, etc), both reported and unreported absences count towards this limit. For more information, please refer to the handbook.
