At Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, Early Childhood teachers are an integral part of the Early Childhood Program, Lower School, and their grade-level team. Episcopal’s Early Childhood Program is a community of teachers who embrace the whole-child educational philosophy and who support students’ creativity, academic growth, and development of physical, social, and emotional skills. Episcopal teachers benefit from excellent facilities and resources, including Episcopal’s QUEST center, a building dedicated to supporting project-based learning in Lower School and Middle School, as well as a beautiful 50-acre campus, excellent technology resources, and an innovative curriculum that provides the opportunity for creativity in instructional design. Teaching positions are ten-month full-time positions with an annual renewal. Positions begin on August 1st of each year. The general responsibilities of an Early Childhood position are detailed below.

Description of School
Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, a college preparatory educational community of approximately 950 students and approximately 170 professionals, includes grades PreK-3 through 12 that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy. Requirements

General Duties

  • Teach a class of students of one grade level.
  • Develop and lead effective, creative, and developmentally appropriate lessons emphasizing the importance of play and active exploration in developing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills.
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers to plan and implement lessons and with administrators and Early Childhood and Lower School faculty to ensure proper vertical alignment of content and skills.
  • Evaluate student learning through a variety of assessments and communicate student progress to administrators, students, and families.
  • Attend scheduled faculty/division/department meetings.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Perform additional faculty duties assigned including, but not limited to supervising students during carpool, lunch, recess, and so forth.

Personal and Professional Characteristics and Experiences

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education, or certification in Elementary or Early Childhood Education is required.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of the developmental characteristics of this age group. Understands the importance of nurturing social-emotional development in young children.
  • Creativity in lesson design; develops a classroom environment where purposeful play and outdoor exploration are nurtured.
  • Collaborative spirit when working with colleagues within the same grade level and across grade levels within the same subject area.
  • Excellent classroom management skills that promote a positive classroom environment. Familiarity with Responsive Classroom is a plus.
  • An ability to communicate clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to juggle many responsibilities, and adaptability to change.
  • Embraces the whole child educational philosophy and puts students first.
