Campus Leaders Participate in First Grade Nonfiction Lesson
January 10th, 2023
A first grade study of nonfiction literature came to life when the six year olds chose two members of the Episcopal community to interview. Head of School Dr. Carrie Steakley and Athletic Director Randy Richard enthusiastically answered students’ questions.
What is your favorite thing about education/Episcopal?
Without hesitation, Dr. Steakley informed students that what she loves most about being in education is spending time with students of all ages. Richard shared a similar answer about why he loves Episcopal. “Being with kids,” he said. With a chuckle, he told students spending time with students keeps him feeling young.
Both administrators shared details about previous jobs, what their typical day is like now and how long they were in their careers before moving into their current roles. Students were inquisitive and also wanted to know what these adults do in their free time. Dr. Steakley reported a love for being outdoors and Richard enjoys spending time with his family and grilling with friends.
Fostering a Love of Reading and Writing
A “mini-field trip” like this one is an engaging way for students to develop a better understanding of nonfiction literature. The lesson is part of an overall effort to encourage a love of reading and writing. Activities are offered throughout Lower School to help students in every grade level grow more confident in these important building blocks of learning. Additional initiatives like Drop Everything and Read and author visits also bolster this reading and writing culture. With interviews complete, first graders will now focus on writing their stories.
First graders are also focused on their new project-based lesson, Enchanted Engineering. Students will explore fairy tales, write about what they learn and participate in design challenges along the way. We can’t wait to read what they have to say about their experience!
The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge 2024-2025 application is now available! For more information on the application process, to schedule a tour, or learn more about the private school, contact us at [email protected] or 225-755-2685.
