Episcopal Golfer's College Dream Comes True

November 12th, 2021

Boyd Owens signs with Wake Forest

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve dreamed of being a college golfer.” Boyd Owens, Class of 2022

Episcopal golfer Boyd Owens’ dream has come true. This week, he officially signed to play with the Wake Forest golf team next fall. Joining the national college golf powerhouse is a dream that’s been years in the making. “I’ve played golf as long as I can remember,” says Boyd. “Ever since I was a young kid I’ve loved going out to the course and just spending time outdoors. I started playing competitively at 11 and have loved it since.”

Family, friends and members of the Episcopal athletic staff surrounded Boyd as he made the announcement in the Episcopal Field House. “This opportunity means the world for me,” says Boyd who thanked the crowd gathered to celebrate. Athletic Director Randy Richard is pleased to see Boyd continue pursuing his dream. “Boyd is a great young man with an incredible work ethic,” he says. “The time and energy he spends not only honing his golf game and career but to make ‘normal’ life fit in around it is astounding.  It has been a pleasure to watch Boyd grow during his time at Episcopal and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for this talented student-athlete.”

Boyd hopes to study a business or economics-related field. Choosing Wake Forest as the next step in his academic journey was a no-brainer. “When I first went to visit Wake Forest I instantly fell in love with the school,” he says. “All of the buildings, fall colors, and athletic facilities made me feel at home. After spending some time with the team and at the school I knew I wanted to spend the next four years there.”

Boyd offers this to fellow students as they consider their future paths. “My biggest advice to my classmates would be to work as hard as you can and to make sure you love what you’re doing.”

The hard work has certainly paid off for Boyd. In March, Boyd was one of two high school golfers to qualify for the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, a Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Event. He beat 116 other golfers in the qualifier. The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental tour for the PGA Tour and features pro golfers.

Congratulations, Boyd!
